From my own personal experience, occasionally softening upwards a photograph may possibly provide the professional photographer with a bit of an imaginative flare. More often than not however, the soft blur isn't what exactly you had under consideration and can quite often spoil an otherwise good image, especially if you intend on enlarging the item.
